I loved this book! I loved it so much that, when I finished it, I immediately ordered the sequel - and I loved that one just as much, if not more! Laine is an innocent, honest, dirt-poor mountain girl that life has treated badly. She goes through so much just to survive and in the end she receives love and keeps the things she holds dear to her, altho at a price. What made me mad was the way some people (including her husband and her own mother) treated her. Altho some of the things that happened to her and some of the things she did were extreme, and sometimes not entirely believable, she did what she had to do, in order to survive and keep the things that meant so much to her and keep her children safe. I know people are treated this way in reality, but it still makes me mad. The storyline was great; the characters instantly identifiable, and the descriptions made you feel like you were right there with her. I would recommend this book to everyone!

It's hard to believe the hardness of the life Elaine has to endure; the servitude, cruelty, lies and just plain hard work. But most women who have lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains can tell you just how real this book is and how soul saving the mountains can be. I couldn't put it down.
I started reading this book yesterday evening, and finished it at 500 this morning! (With most books, I would have fallen asleep by midnight, if not sooner.) I wanted to keep reading--and keep reading--to find out what happened next! The setting for the book is not far from where I currently live. So I was delighted to learn more about mountain culture in the early 1900's, while also reading such a WONDERFUL book!!
Held my interest from the first word and I finished it in one weekend. I just bought the second sequel and will begin it right away. The story was gripping. The setting was authentic and I especially love that Laine wasn't goody goody and handled her mother and sister situation as she did instead of going all soft and too goog to be true. She was a delightful character.
I finished this book in two days which is a record for me. I have read many books about early life in places like Appalachia, and for some reason I am drawn to those stories and settings. This book had it all. I really got a feel for what it was like to live day by day with only the most meager essentials to stay alive. Add to that a mentally ill mother and nasty sister and I was hooked from the first page. It took an unexpected turn when a bit of "mystery" was thrown in which kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could. I am delighted to see that there are a couple of other books in this series. I have read many books by Sharyn McCrumb and love her writing style. Now I have another author to watch - Peggy Poe Stern. Great read!
Too much blood and gore and not very sophisticated. Not very believable that people could be so violent. I will not be reading part two.
This book was about life in a different time. The setting was southern mountains in a time that was when women were the heart of home life and existence. Very descriptive writing and where this place is must be ruggedly beautiful. My family came from the pioneer spirit of this book and I found it a wonderful story about the spirit of a young woman. It is a good read and entertaining. I am satisfied with this story on its own and its conclusion. I would read the series but haven't as of this time.
I don't read much fiction, usually I am more into Biographies, Memiors, true crime, but this book preview caught my attention. Having grown up in the hills of Arkansas, Much of surroundings were explained in such detail, that I decided to buy the book. I LOVED it! In fact, just purchased the sequel to it and cant wait to read it as well.! NOTHING takes the place of experience, and Ms Sterns' vivid description of mountain life is not just true, but I felt like I knew this girl personally! Who knows? I might become a fiction reader if all books were writtten by her! Great book!!
