Nagata’s vision is of a future in which nanotechnology is dominant and inevitable. She develops this by weaving explicative beads into the narrative tapestry, a necessary skill in science fiction, and one she’s mastered. As we start to understand how genetic manipulation, autonomous nanocreatures (“Makers”) and hyperadvanced information technology control everyone’s lives, we come to know Nikko (“rhymes with ‘psycho’”), his father’s genetically engineered masterpiece, the sinister Kirstin Adair, happy to take Nikko as her lover before enforcing the law that will abolish his genotype (along with him), and gentle Phousita, become an unintended goddess by the agency of the unimaginably powerful Maker. And yes, the title is a wry grammatical twist: the book is not about a maker of Bohrs, but a Maker named after Bohr, its creator. By all means, read “Tech Heaven”, but it’s OK to start here, before “Deception Well” and “Vast”. You’ll enjoy the ride.

When I first picked up a Nagata novel, it was years ago in the 1990's. I bought the book, "Limits of Vision". It was actually a few years before I was old enough to actually read the book. I have to say this, I was instantly hooked. Linda's mind is very complex and brings to the table an extremely advanced look into the world of cybernetics and nano-tech.
Finally in the year of 2011, I purchased a copy of Linda's book The Bohr Maker. How glorious it was. Like with Limits of Vision, her in-depth thought process and clearly researched facts about underprivileged people and current nano-technology, Linda Brings these things from the now to the Future. The only think I can say to the fans of techno sci-fi is to read this book. You will NOT be disappointed.
This is a must-read. Even more impressive, it's her first novel. I'm reading all her other books now. It's so gratifying to find books like this for the , especially with so much self-published garbage out there. The book is fascinating from many perspectives - the concept, the writing, the plot, the characters. I can't wait for more of her books.
Nagata is up there in my top 10 of sci-fi writers with her combination of plausible tech, novel social constructs, and most importantly great storytelling skills. I would recommend this to anyone who reads Niven, Stross, or Iain M. Banks. I'm looking forward to reading more Nagata novels.
I chain-read this and the next two of The Nanotech Succession. The Bohr Maker was grounded in enough familiar elements to keep my head from twirling off once the Big Concept jelled, and packed the ending with all sorts of possibilities for future stories while leaving me satisfied instead of floating. The efficiency of Nagata's storytelling reminds me much of the way Philip K. Dick, Larry Niven, and Alfred Bester streamlined their stories, letting the reader fill in the implications. The next two books of the Succession occur much later in the timeline and slingshot the reader into brain-stretching surreal societies that gave me a week of strange dreams. Definitely worth reading.
Slow at first, and some may be turned off by the realistic depiction of conditions for poor children living on the street, but it goes so much further than that once you get past the first 50 pages!
This is an amazing book for any tech, sci-fi or action lover. A lot of sci-fi books stand only on the legs of techno speculation and can have a writing style that can lose the reader from time to time. This is not the case with this book. Linda Nagata has a style that is simply enthralling. there is a detailed immersive world of future tech all around but it is her writing style that draws you in and her multi layered action packed plot that makes this a hard book to put down. This is the first book of hers I have read but she has instantly made my top 10 list making it on par with, if not surpassing, some of the greats of the genre like Philip K. Dick and H. G. Wells. this is the second book of 4 in her nanotech succession yet they are all stand alone books with vast amounts of time in between installments in what seems to be a large overview of the effects of nanotech on human evolution. If you love action packed Sci-fi that asks heavy philosophical questions about the human condition then this is a MUST READ!
A compelling story needs redeeming characters you like and respect to carry it along. It also needs enough logical ties to known reality to be believable. Nagata’s tale lacks these things. Every character has a somewhat selfish, despicable side, not just the ruthless police chief sworn to root out illegal nanotechnology regardless of the law. There isn’t any even remotely scientific explanation to keep the story above the level of dark magical fantasy. By the end, you don’t care what happens to the characters, you just want to be done with it. NOT recommended.
